Chelsea’s pursuit of defensive reinforcements has taken a step forward, with Dutch talent Jorrel Hato now firmly on their radar.
The 19-year-old Ajax star, known for his versatility at both left-back and centre-back, has attracted significant interest from across Europe—but it’s the Blues who are moving quickest.
Speaking to De Telegraaf, Hato’s agent, Humphry Nijman, confirmed that Chelsea have formally reached out to Ajax regarding a potential transfer. “Jorrel is currently in discussions with Chelsea,” Nijman stated, adding that club-to-club negotiations are also underway.
Hato has risen rapidly through the ranks, debuting for the Dutch national team in November 2023. Since then, he has earned six caps, including a standout performance against Spain in the Nations League.
Despite his age, he already boasts 111 senior appearances for Ajax, marking him as one of the Eredivisie’s most promising young defenders.
Interest in Hato stretches beyond Stamford Bridge. European heavyweights like Real Madrid and Arsenal have previously scouted the youngster. However, Chelsea have taken the lead—reportedly making initial contact as early as December, before reopening talks this summer.
The West London club’s ability to complete the deal may hinge on further player sales. With Noni Madueke already out the door and other potential departures—including Christopher Nkunku, Renato Veiga, and possibly Nicolas Jackson—Chelsea could free up funds and squad space for additional reinforcements.
Manager Enzo Maresca has been active in reshaping the squad, with close to £170 million already spent on new arrivals such as Liam Delap, Joao Pedro, Jamie Gittens, Dario Essugo, and Mamadou Sarr. Young stars like Kendry Paez and Estevao have also been officially signed in recent weeks.
With the transfer window closing on September 1, Chelsea’s business is far from over—and Jorrel Hato could be the next major name through the door at Stamford Bridge.
