Revealed: Why Florian Wirtz Chose Liverpool Over Bayern Munich in Record-Breaking Transfer

Liverpool’s Ambition and Arne Slot’s Vision Swayed the German Star
    By PLN1 week ago
    Florian Wirtz

Florian Wirtz has revealed the key reasons behind his decision to join Liverpool this summer, despite strong interest from Bayern Munich. The 22-year-old midfielder signed from Bayer Leverkusen in a deal worth up to £116 million — setting a new Liverpool club record and potentially breaking the British transfer record, should all performance-based add-ons be triggered.

The agreement includes £100 million guaranteed, with an additional £16 million in bonuses, edging past Chelsea’s 2023 acquisition of Enzo Fernández.

A New Challenge After Bundesliga Glory

Wirtz arrives at Anfield after a sensational campaign with Bayer Leverkusen, where he helped lead the club to their first-ever Bundesliga title during the 2023/24 season. Over the course of his time in Germany, he made 197 appearances, scored 57 goals, and established himself as one of Europe’s most promising attacking midfielders.

Speaking after his arrival, Wirtz shared his ambitions:

“I want to win everything, every year. Last season Liverpool won the Premier League — my goal is to help win it again and push further in the Champions League.

I’m really ambitious, and this move offers a new adventure. I wanted something different — a fresh start outside the Bundesliga in a league I’ve always admired.”

The midfielder also revealed that conversations with players already in the Premier League encouraged his move, describing the experience as “perfect” and something he’s been excited about for some time.

Slot’s Tactical Vision Made the Difference

Wirtz wasn’t short of suitors. Both Manchester City and Bayern Munich were strongly interested, with City eventually pursuing Rayan Cherki instead. Bayern’s pursuit, however, intensified following Jamal Musiala’s injury during the Club World Cup.

But it was Liverpool manager Arne Slot who ultimately tipped the scales. Wirtz’s father and agent, Hans-Joachim Wirtz, confirmed that Slot’s personal touch and clear tactical vision played a decisive role.

“Arne Slot convinced Florian personally. He’s a very pleasant person and was able to explain exactly how Florian fits into Liverpool’s tactical framework — both in possession and in pressing,” Wirtz Sr. stated.

“That clarity made a big impression.”

    Bayern’s Late Push Not Enough

Despite a strong pitch from Vincent Kompany, Bayern Munich’s new manager, Wirtz opted for a new chapter in the Premier League. His father emphasized that the financial offers from both clubs were comparable, and the decision came down to subtle, sporting factors.

“Bayern tried everything. Vincent Kompany had strong ideas, and the club really pushed, but it ultimately came down to details — the role offered, the direction of the project, and how Florian could grow.”

Hans-Joachim also shared insights from a final conversation with Uli Hoeneß, Bayern’s honorary president:

“Uli had been very involved and was, understandably, disappointed. But he was respectful and fair, as always.”

    Wirtz’s Arrival Signals Liverpool’s Ambition

As Liverpool prepare for the new season under Arne Slot, the signing of Florian Wirtz underlines the club’s intent to not only defend their Premier League title but also make a deeper run in the Champions League. With Wirtz, Jeremie Frimpong, and Milos Kerkez joining a squad already packed with talent, Liverpool look set to launch another serious challenge on multiple fronts.
