It’s now August, and while most of this summer’s football free agents have secured new clubs, several well-known former Premier League players remain without a contract.
We take a look at four notable free agents still available on the market — and what they could offer potential suitors.
Takehiro Tomiyasu
Former Arsenal defender Takehiro Tomiyasu is still on the lookout for a new club after parting ways with the Gunners in a mutual agreement earlier this summer.
The Japanese international made a promising start at Arsenal following his move from Bologna in 2021 but has since struggled with recurring injury issues. Last season, he played just six Premier League minutes, and he’s started only 16 league games across the past three campaigns.
Although he’s expected to be sidelined until October, Tomiyasu’s age (26) and tactical flexibility — capable of playing across the back four — make him a tempting low-cost option for teams seeking defensive cover.
Dominic Calvert-Lewin
After spending nine years at Everton, Dominic Calvert-Lewin is a free agent following the expiration of his contract.
Once seen as a future England regular, the striker’s career has been derailed by persistent injuries, and he found the net just three times in the league last season. Still, at 28 years old, Calvert-Lewin remains a dangerous aerial threat and could appeal to teams favoring a more physical, direct attacking style.

Victor Lindelöf
Victor Lindelöf’s time at Manchester United has come to an end after eight seasons and 284 appearances in all competitions.
The 31-year-old Sweden international offers experience at the highest level, with both club and country, and remains on the radar of several clubs looking to bolster their defensive depth. Despite holding talks with interested sides, his next destination is still undecided.
Josh Brownhill
Midfield engine Josh Brownhill is another standout name still without a club, having left Burnley at the end of his contract.
The 29-year-old was pivotal during the Clarets’ promotion campaign, scoring 18 goals and providing 6 assists — a record bettered only by Joel Piroe in the Championship last season.
Reportedly on the radar of Leicester City, Brownhill could be a key signing for any team aiming to push for promotion or stay competitive in the top flight.
While the transfer window rolls on, these four players present valuable options — each with proven Premier League or Championship pedigree. Clubs in need of late-window reinforcements could do far worse than snapping up one of these experienced free agents.
